The American Parkinsons Disease Association | Hampton Roads Area Chapter | To ease the burden and find a cure...
About Us
The history of our Chapter dates back to 1980, when our first Parkinson Disease support group was formed in Virginia Beach. A second support group was formed in 1998 and the leadership of both support groups agreed to form the Virginia Beach Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association in 2000. This unified group later applied for and received designation as, a local chapter of the National American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA). The APDA is a 501(c) 3 organization. The local chapter is a nonprofit organization and operates as an extension of the national APDA with all the same rights and benefits of the national APDA to conduct local charitable activities for the benefit of individual suffering from Parkinson or other neurological disorders.
The Hampton Roads Chapter has an active Board . We have 9 to 10 Board members who volunteer from the community to serve 2 year terms. The Board consists of an Executive Board with offices being: President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The current Board also has a Vice -President that was voted in during the 2004- 2005 term.
The Board conducts it's monthly meeting in accordance of it's by- laws. Minutes are taken and a Treasurer's Report is reviewed at each meeting. Some of the goals the Board strives to provide to the community is to increase the publics awareness of Parkinson Disease , to provide local support groups, and to rise money for research. The monthly meetings are held at OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP located on 4560 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach at 5:30 pm on every third Tuesday. (No meeting in December.) These meeting are open to any one who wishes to attend.
